Power Play #8

  • Always consider people
  • Always consider your connections and network first
  • Always consider referrals when outlining goals
  • Always set goals before a gathering, to meet people, learn information, make contacts, etc.

The "F" word: Failure

As people trying to succeed, we don't like to use the "F" word yet failure is part of our vocabulary. To lessen the blow if you fail to accomplish a goal, consider:

  • Babe Ruth struck out 1 ,330 times, but he also hit 714 home runs
  • Thomas Edison was thrown out of school in the early grades when the teachers decided he could not do the work
  • When Bob Dylan performed at a school talent show, his classmates failed to see and hear his potential. They booed him off the stage and out the door
  • R. H. Macy failed seven times before his store in New York caught on
  • The Good Earth by Pearl S. Buck received a score of rejections before it was published
  • Henry Ford forgot to put reverse into his first automobile
  • Thomas J. Watson, Jr., past president of IBM, said, "The formula for success is to double your failure rate."
Do not allow the pot holes of life stop you from progressing to your highest level of personal and professional success. Pick yourself up. Dust off your boots, your pride and your goals, and get going again.

Self-adjusting goals

Goal setting and achieving, like any habit, takes commitment and determination. Once the practice is established it becomes a way of life.

Be flexible and review your goal list often. Keep your list posted in a conspicuous spot; read it twice a day. Every month, physically update it. Physically is the key here, because these are working goals and as such, are subject to change.

What happens when goals have been accomplished? Few of us rollout of bed and say, Now I'll meander around and find some stuff to do. After you have achieved your ambitions...long and short term aims...reset your goals. Re-adjust.

Here's how:
  1. Reward yourself when a goal has been achieved.
  2. Review and revise your goals immediately.
  3. Be open to "danger" as you move out of your comfort zone.
  4. Identify how your network has been a vehicle for achieving your goals.
  5. Be flexible and see change as a challenge, an opportunity .

IT'S BEEN SAID YOU NEED TO ACCOMPLISH ONLY TWO THINGS
TO BECOME SUCCESSFUL:

1. GET STARTED
2. NEVER QUIT
